Family Self-Sufficiency

The Central Falls Family Self-Sufficiency Foundation (FSS) is a non-profit arm of the Central Falls Housing Authority that serves low-income families that live in Central Falls, RI. Our agency’s mission is to improve the quality of life for families that live in Central Falls and receive housing assistance, by offering the tools and support needed to break their cycle of dependence on welfare and become economically self-sufficient.

The Central Falls Family Self-Sufficiency Foundation is a small grassroots organization that has a sizeable impact on the lives of families living in poverty. It was established as a separate nonprofit in 1995 by the Central Falls Housing Authority because low-income parents living in Central Falls needed additional support to complete their education, enter the workforce, and become economically self-sufficient. Housing Authorities are required to offer a limited Family Self-Sufficiency Program to families that receive public housing assistance. However, a more comprehensive program was needed to successfully move Central Falls’ low-income families from economic dependence to economic self-sufficiency and ensure their children grow into self-sufficient adults. Thus the CFHA made the decision to establish our agency as a separate nonprofit. This move gave us the freedom to attain funds from other sources and provide more services to our target population.
